Shapedrift
DCA Gallery, New York
September 8 – October 13, 2001
Shapedrift brought together paintings and prints in which rhythmic structures, saturated colour, and shifting organic forms moved between control and transformation. The exhibition reflected the close relationship between painting and printmaking in Bjarne Werner Sørensen’s work: the rhythmic line of the prints reappears in the paintings, while the handling of the printing plate retains a painterly quality.
The exhibition opened three days before the attacks of September 11. As September 11 was the gallery’s first scheduled opening day following the reception, the exhibition consequently unfolded in the immediate aftermath of 9/11.
In his catalogue essay Fluid Patterns, written in relation to paintings from this period, Danish philosopher Ole Thyssen described the works as existing “in between the strongly controlled and the random” and as “snapshots of transformations.”
