Rift — Lithographic Prints

The Rift series presents lithographs printed directly from stone by the artist. Layers of shadow and form move across fractured pictorial spaces where bodies appear to dissolve and reassemble. The images shift between drawing and print, between presence and disappearance.

The motifs are drawn directly onto the lithographic stones with brush and tusche, applied in washes that allow the image to develop through the material conditions of the stone. The forms remain abstract but suggest fragments of bodies and spatial structures. Across the series, the images unfold through a serial process in which each impression marks a new moment in the development of the work. Only a selection of impressions from the series is presented here.

Process

The stone lithography prints were produced at the Danish Art Workshops in Copenhagen and printed by artist Bjarne Werner on a Takach handpress.

Working directly with the stones allows the image to emerge through the physical process of lithography. The first impressions are printed in black and halftones — technically demanding passages where precision and unpredictability meet. These are followed by colour layers printed singly or in varying combinations.

Rather than aiming for identical repetition, the prints develop through small variations in pressure, ink strength, and layering. Each impression becomes a distinct state of the image while remaining part of the same series.

Eget Tryk

The prints are marked E.T. (Eget Tryk) — “own print”, a Danish graphic tradition in which the artist carries out the entire printing process personally.

Printing therefore becomes part of the artistic work itself. Because each impression responds to the conditions at the press, the works are rarely produced as a strictly fixed edition. Even when the motif recurs, every print carries traces of its own making.
